Decisions Loom on Next Steps for Darwin Sports Facility Upgrades

Richardson Park has reopened as a community sporting facility after a $7.1 million redevelopment that replaced the old grandstand with two new multi-purpose sports fields.

Why the timing matters

The Northern Territory Government has already committed funds in Budget 2024 for two other ovals and a stadium upgrade, while the City of Darwin has given approval for a new dry-land training facility. These projects sit alongside the recent reopening and create overlapping timelines for contractors, clubs and maintenance crews.

Named venues now include TIO Stadium, Woodroffe Oval, Tracy Village Sports Precinct and Parap Pool. Each carries its own funding line and construction schedule that will require coordinated decisions on sequencing and shared resources.

Evidence from current allocations

The TIO Stadium package totals nearly $1 million, of which $280,000 is earmarked for a cricket pitch nursery. Woodroffe Oval redevelopment carries a $2.8 million allocation for lighting and change rooms. Tracy Village Sports Precinct has a separate $3 million line starting with football facilities for Hellenic Athletic Club. Swimming Northern Territory’s Parap Pool project received council approval with construction listed to begin in July 2025.
