Darwin Running Community Rides High on World Cup Buzz and Track-Event Momentum
From parkrun PBs to twilight track meets, the city’s fitness scene clocks strong results this week.
How we reported this

Darwin's running corps turned out in force last weekend, with the tropical winter conditions delivering near-perfect times at the Esplanade parkrun and the Darwin Athletics Club's twilight mile series. Race director Margie Connors confirmed Saturday morning's 5 km event drew 342 finishers, the second-highest attendance this year, as the city's fitness wave shows no signs of easing.
Weekend Results
At the Esplanade course along the waterfront, 28 runners set personal bests. The men's open winner, Josh Bellamy, crossed the line at 15:42, while women's champion Lisa Tran stopped the clock at 18:07, both season-best marks for the athletes. Connors noted the humidity held at 68 percent, which she described as 'about as good as it gets in July'. Meanwhile, the Darwin Athletics Club's twilight mile at Marrara Athletics Centre on Friday night saw 56 runners complete the four-lap challenge, with the fastest time of 4:29 set by under-20 athlete Sam Houghton.
The surge in participation mirrors broader national trends. According to the most recent Sport Australia data, recreational running across the Northern Territory climbed 12 percent in the 12 months to June 2025. Local event organisers say the spillover from the World Cup and Tour de France coverage has driven new sign-ups, particularly among people aged 25 to 40.
What's Next
Next Saturday the Darwin Trail Running Series stages its third event of the season at Charles Darwin National Park, with an 8 km and 15 km loop starting at 7 a.m. On-course first aid and water stations will be provided by St John Ambulance. Entries remain open until Thursday via the NT Athletics website, with the 15 km race filling at 120 entrants as of Sunday evening. For those looking to ease into the sport, the Darwin Running Club also hosts a free guided 5 km social run every Wednesday evening from the Nightcliff foreshore, departing the Surf Life Saving Club at 6 p.m.
