Darwin's Direct Links and Full-Fibre Network Mark It as a Global Connectivity Outlier
Full national broadband rollout, a 20-terabit local backbone and the 2023 Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore cable give the city faster Asia routes than Sydney or Melbourne.

Darwin stands alone among Australian capitals as the only one with complete Fibre to the Premises coverage on the National Broadband Network. More than 90 percent of premises can access speeds up to 100 Mbps through that infrastructure.
The distinction matters because most other capitals still rely on mixed fibre-to-the-node or hybrid connections that limit peak performance. Darwin's uniform FTTP setup removes those bottlenecks for households and businesses alike.
Terabit Backbone and First Direct Cable
The Northern Territory Government worked with Vocus to lift the territory optic fibre backbone to 20 terabits of capacity. That upgrade moved Darwin from a gigabit city designation to what officials now call a Terabit Territory.
In 2023 the city activated its first direct international route, the Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore cable. The link carries 40 terabits and cuts latency to Singapore by a factor of 2.4 compared with routes that still run through Sydney.
Three further international cables are either live or due by the end of 2026. The Asia Connect Cable-1 and Hawaiki Nui Cable will add routes to Southeast Asia, the United States and eastern Australia.
Free Public Wi-Fi and Everyday Reach
The City of Darwin operates free 24/7 Wi-Fi at 38 access points across the central area. Coverage includes libraries, pools, community centres and the main retail strips along Mitchell Street and Smith Street.
Those public nodes sit on top of the same high-capacity backbone, so visitors and residents move between home fibre, mobile and street-level Wi-Fi without hitting the congestion common in cities that still depend on older copper last-mile segments.
Local businesses already cite the combination of full FTTP, the new submarine cables and the public Wi-Fi grid when they discuss data-intensive projects that would otherwise route through interstate hubs.
With the additional cables scheduled to reach full operation by 2026, the same network fabric is expected to handle rising demand from research, logistics and content services that need low-latency paths to Asian and US markets.
