Swimming in Darwin: Safe Beaches, Lagoons and Pools for the Top End
Swimming in Darwin requires an understanding of the tropical environment and its seasonal hazards, including marine stingers (box jellyfish and irukanji) and estuarine saltwater crocodiles. The Darwin Waterfront Precinct's Recreational Lagoon and Wave Lagoon are the safest and most practical year-round swimming options, with managed facilities, supervision and no stinger or crocodile risk. Casuarina Beach is a popular ocean swimming beach and has designated stinger net enclosures during the stinger season (October to May). Lake Alexander at East Point is a managed saltwater lake open for swimming and is stinger and crocodile safe. Litchfield National Park's Wangi and Florence Falls (approximately 90 minutes south) are magnificent freshwater falls and swimming holes safe for swimming outside the wet season flood period. Always check current park and council advisories before swimming in any natural body of water near Darwin.
