One in five Darwin adults now reports feeling lonely several times a week, according to a 2025 Northern Territory health survey released in May.

The figure marks a sharp rise from pre-2020 levels and has prompted local health services to treat social connection as a frontline intervention for stress and mental health. Top End Health Service data shows referrals for anxiety and low mood have increased 17 percent since 2023, with many patients citing limited daily contact outside work or screens as a key factor.

Local spots drawing people together

The Darwin Waterfront wave lagoon hosts a free Tuesday evening walking group organised by the Darwin Runners Club that starts at 5:30 pm near the Wave Lagoon entrance on Stokes Hill Road. Participants cover a 4 km loop along the Esplanade before finishing with coffee at the adjacent deck. Mindil Beach sunset markets on Thursdays and Sundays draw thousands for fresh mango, grilled barramundi and live music, giving residents an easy, low-cost way to chat with neighbours from Fannie Bay and Parap.

Both venues operate year-round thanks to the city’s consistent dry-season weather, removing the usual barriers of heat or rain that keep people indoors elsewhere in Australia.

Numbers and practical steps

Research published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in late 2025 found that adults who meet friends or join activities at least twice a week report 34 percent lower rates of moderate psychological distress. In Darwin that threshold can be met for under $20 a week through club memberships or market stall purchases.

TEHS community mental health teams now run monthly information sessions at the Waterfront precinct on how to start or join such groups. Residents can check the Darwin Runners Club website for the current schedule or simply turn up at Mindil Beach any Thursday from 5 pm. Those already experiencing significant distress are advised to speak with a GP or contact TEHS directly before relying solely on social activities.
