Darwin council elections — when, how and why your vote matters
A plain-English guide for Darwin voters.
When are the next Darwin council elections?
Northern Territory council elections are held every four years. The most recent City of Darwin election was held in August 2025, with the next election due in 2029. Elections are run independently of NT Legislative Assembly and federal elections, and use a separate roll administered for local government.
How to vote
To vote in a Darwin council election you must be enrolled at an address within the City of Darwin municipality. Australian citizens enrolled federally are automatically enrolled for NT council elections at the same address. Voting is by preferential ballot — you number candidates in order of preference, and preferences are distributed until candidates reach the quota required to be elected.
You can vote in person at a polling place on election day, or apply for a postal vote in advance if you can't attend on the day. Early voting centres open in the weeks leading up to the election.
Why local elections matter
- Council controls planning and development decisions in your street and suburb.
- Council manages local roads, footpaths, parks and playgrounds you use every day.
- Council sets annual rates and the budget that funds local services.
Update your enrolment with the Australian Electoral Commission — your NT council enrolment uses the same address.
- aec.gov.au — federal and council enrolment.
- ntec.nt.gov.au — NT Electoral Commission, which runs council elections.
