The City of Darwin has rolled out no-cost group exercise sessions aimed at residents aged 60 and over, with classes scheduled at waterfront and beach locations.

The City of Darwin began free senior fitness programs on 1 July 2026, with twice-weekly sessions at the Darwin Waterfront wave lagoon and Mindil Beach.
Northern Territory census data shows the over-60 population grew 12 percent between 2021 and 2026, and local health services report rising rates of preventable conditions linked to inactivity. Council staff say the free classes respond directly to those figures while using Darwin’s year-round outdoor conditions.
Classes at the Darwin Waterfront wave lagoon run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7am and focus on low-impact water walking and gentle resistance moves in the shallow lagoon area. A separate walking group meets at Mindil Beach on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30am, starting near the market stalls and heading along the foreshore path toward The Esplanade. The Darwin Runners Club supplies volunteer leaders for the beach walks, while Top End Health Service supplies exercise guidelines reviewed by its chronic-disease team.
Additional sessions take place at the Parap Community Centre on Thursdays at 9am, using the indoor hall when monsoon rains hit. All programs remain open to any Darwin resident over 60; no booking is required, though participants are asked to sign a simple attendance sheet at the first class.
Council records list 612 attendances across the first six weeks of the current program, with an average of 47 people per session. The entire schedule carries a zero cost to participants, funded through the City of Darwin’s annual community-wellness allocation. Similar programs in 2025 recorded a 28 percent drop in reported falls among regular attendees, according to follow-up calls made by council staff three months after each block of classes.
Residents can check the current timetable on the City of Darwin website or collect a printed copy at the Civic Centre on Harry Chan Avenue. Those seeking medical clearance before starting are directed to their usual GP or the nearest TEHS clinic. New classes begin every Monday, and the council has stated the program will continue through the 2026 dry season.
