Art and Culture in Darwin: First Nations Art, MAGNT and the Creative Scene

Darwin has an outstanding cultural and arts scene disproportionate to its size, driven largely by its position as the closest major Australian city to the largest living First Nations cultures on the continent. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) on Conacher Street houses one of Australia's finest First Nations art collections, with works spanning the Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. The Darwin Visual Arts Association on Smith Street has an accessible gallery run by and for local artists. Marrara's Museum and Art Gallery precinct at Nightcliff is a further gallery resource. The Darwin Festival, held annually in August at the peak of the Dry season, is one of Australia's major outdoor arts festivals covering music, theatre, dance and visual art across the city's parks and venues.
